In December Prague turns into a fairy tale: a huge Christmas tree on Old Town Square, wooden stalls at the Christmas markets, hot mulled wine and trdelník pastries. The New Year's fireworks over the Vltava are among the most beautiful in Europe.
Prague is in the Schengen area, so apply for your visa at least 3–4 weeks ahead. Direct flights from Baku are limited; the easiest options connect via Istanbul or Vienna. On package tours the agency usually arranges visa support.
Stay in the Old Town (Staré Město) or Malá Strana so the main sights are within walking distance. Visit Charles Bridge, Prague Castle and the astronomical clock early in the morning, when the crowds are smaller.
December temperatures hover around zero: pack a warm coat, waterproof shoes and gloves. Book restaurants for New Year's Eve in advance — free tables are hard to find on 31 December.
